16 Days Southern Madagascar Safaris Tour with Andasibe – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Antananarivo & Transfer To The Hotel

Arrive at Ivato International Airport – the main gateway to Madagascar, meet our representative and transfer to the Airport

Accommodation: La Varangue Hotel

Day 2:  Antananarivo –Andasibe (Analamazaotra Reserve)

Drive for 3hrs to Andasibe and take up the hike at Analamazaotra Nature Reserve looking out for largest of all lemurs called Indri along with a range of plants and endemic animals.  Enjoy a night walk looking out for nocturnal.

 Accommodation: Vakona Forest Lodge

Day 3:  Tour Andasibe / Mantadia National Park

After some ride on a bumpy road, you will reach Mantadia Reserve, home for other species of lemurs, birds and chameleons.

This 4-hour hike is rather challenging but worth-it to explore the primary rainforest of Mantadia National Park.

You will seek Diademed sifaka, Black-and-white ruffed lemurs, the insectivorous tenrecs and the rainforest-dependent ground rollers.  In the afternoon, you will spot lemurs closely at the Lemurs’ Island.

Day 4: Andasibe –Antananarivo – Ambohibary

Settle for breakfast after which you take up a 5hr drive to Ambohibary in the south. Explore the local culture enjoying local cuisine, dance among others. Spend a night inside a Malagasy house without running water and no electricity

Day 5:  Ambohibary- Antsirabe

Tour the surrounding villages and transfer to Antsirabe – the city of water and rickshaws. You follow a paved road for about 1hr and arrive at Antsirabe. Tour the precious stones and minerals workshops.

Day 6: Antsirabe – Ranomafana

Transfer to Ambositra known for nice woodcarving workshops. Proceed to Ranomafana National Park and take a short walk in the evening to explore the nocturnal animals thriving in the park.

Accommodation: Setam Lodge.

Day 7:  Explore Ranomafana National Park

Ranomafana is a great place presenting an opportunity to explore diverse range of flora and fauna such as the golden bamboo lemur, black and white ruffed lemur, greater bamboo lemur, over 130 frog species among others. Ranomafana National Park is a section of World Heritage Site Rainforests of the Atsinanana.

Day 8: Ranomafana – Fianarantsoa – Sahambavy

Transfer to Fianarantsoa and upon arrival, take up a day hike to explore Betsileo villages with pirogue ride to Sahambavy – the tea plantation area.

Day 9:  Sahambavy – Fianarantsoa- Ambalavao – Tsaranoro

Transfer to Ambalavao to explore the Antaimoro paper factory, a silk weavers’ workshop as well as Anja – a community-run reserve. From there, proceed to Tsaranoro Valley.

Day 10:   Tsaranoro Valley (Andringitra National Park)

Undertake a great hike to the west of Andringitra National Park. This Gondwana massif has a wide diversity of ecosystems ranging from low altitude rainforest in the East to alti-mountain and savannah. There are several options of hiking level depending on one’s ability.

Day 11:   Tsaranoro – Isalo

Transfer to Isalo after breakfast enjoying incredible views of en route scenic landscapes marked with savannah scenery and rocky landscape. Arrive at Isalo in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day relaxing.

Day 12:  Explore Isalo National Park

Isalo National Park is home to 340 species of fauna among which include; 82 bird species, 33 reptile species, 15 frog species along with 14 mammal species.

Some of the significant species include; Malagasy rainbow frog, Madagascar ground boa and the white-lipped bright-eyed frog among others.

The park also feature natural swimming pools inside the canyon that you will find very exciting. Spend the day in the park enjoying wildlife sights and scenery.

Day 13: Isalo – Zombitse – Tulear- Ifaty

After breakfast, transfer to Tulear in the south in the area of savannah and baobab trees. Explore the range of spiny vegetation species endemic to this area. En route is Zombitse National Park which you can visit to explore lemur species like Hapalemurs.

Day 14: Ifaty

Spend the day at leisure and the optional activities include; Scuba diving, snorkeling, Fishing, and Swimming among others.

Day 15: Ifaty – Tulear – Antananarivo

Fly from Tulear Airport to Antananarivo. Visit some sites in the city before retiring for overnight

Day 16: Antananarivo City Tour & Depart

  If time permits, you will have a city tour with our tour guide, including the visit of the Queen’s palace (under reconstruction), and the old palace of the Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony who married the three Queens.

You will be able to visit the handicraft market at Digue before reaching the airport for check-in and flight back home.
