Given the rich wildlife biodiversity that exists in Tanzania’s safari parks, Tanzania is the east Africa leading destination with the most tourist arrivals and revenue collected from tourism alone reaching USD 2.43 billion in 2018, up from USD 2.19 billion in 2017, while tourist arrivals totalled 1.49 million compared with 1.33 million.

Even on the Africa continent level, destination Tanzania still performs well, given recent research publications of a survey conducted by SafariBookings.com which Prime Safaris & Tours Ltd is proud to be a partner to  in 2017 showed  Tanzania was voted the best safari destination in Africa, followed by Botswana, Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

Another international survey ranks 7th most visited country in Sub-Saharan Africa after South Africa (9.5m), Zimbabwe (1.9m), Mozambique (1.7m), Uganda (1.27m), Kenya (1.26m), and Namibia (1.2m) according to Tanzania invest

81% of the total number of tourist arrivals in Tanzania visited the country for leisure and holiday with most of the visitors coming from Africa (46%) and Europe (32%).

Average expenditure per tourist per night was in the range between USD117 and USD277 in 2014, compared to USD236–328 in 2010.

This brief statistical background clearly paints a vivid picture of how Tanzania is revered by travellers around the world.

Be Mindful of Who is Driving You

Although Tanzania is a destination of choice to many travellers, Tanzania is still grappling with a few unpleasant incidents that you may have to pay a little of attention so that you get to enjoy a flawless safari in Tanzania experience like many other travellers have before you.

According to recent reports from Tanzania, there was a cumbersome incident last week in which a Gisborne couple was held by four men and repeatedly told they would be killed during a terrifying two-hour ordeal in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam last week.

Chris Williams and partner Tiffany Zyp, both 31, were forced to give their abductors the PIN numbers to their credit cards.

The men drove them around, as they made repeated withdrawals at ATM machines. They robbed them of $4200 in total from their ATM cards, plus the $500 cash they had on them and their phones. T

he pair had arrived in the eastern port city of Dar es Salaam on a bus from Nairobi just minutes earlier. They needed a taxi to take them to a pre-booked safari trip in Zambia but by sheer bad luck, they ended picking a wrong taxi which led to them being held and got robbed of their money.

The Silver Lining of This Bad Event

After this regrettable incident, the couple went to a police station and recorded a statement about their ordeal and to seek help from the Tanzanian authorities.

After recording their statements, the police transferred the couple to a lodge called Kays lodge where the owner of this lodge turned into a God sent to this couple that had just been taken through an episode of absolute chaos and uncertainty as he gave them his absolute care.

He was so angered by their story because of the effect it has on his business, the reputation of his country which made him to profoundly apologize for what had happened to these people on behalf of Tanzania and tourism at large.

This greatly restored faith in William and his wife as they got to know that someone genuinely cared about them.

The next day Williams returned to the police station where he made sketches of the bandits which enabled the police to quickly identify two men as probable culprits and these were former police officers who had been fired for corruption and were under investigation and the police assured Williams that if this stacks up it’s over for these guys and they’ll be in prison for 15 odd years due to their stack of cases.

The Will to Continue With the World tour

12 Days Tanzania Safari“Victor from Kay’s Lodge is an absolute legend and restored our faith in this part of our trip,” Williams said as departed Tanzania  to continue with their world tour  which has seen them visit numerous countries such Italy, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, England, Wales, Scotland, Morocco, Egypt, UAE, Kenya, Tanzania and they are now in transit to Zambia and they plan to continue with their travel plans.

In response to this tragic story, Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ using their Safe Travel website issued an advisory for Tanzania in December, warning visitors to exercise increased caution so that such as tragedy doesn’t befall another tourist while enjoying a nice tour.

However given the magnitude of this incident, it’s equally fair to mention that Tanzania remains a peaceful, stable and tourist welcoming country given that most of Tanzania’s safari destinations are well protected by the government law enforcement agencies such as the Tanzanian police and army.

These safari destinations such as national parks especially in the northern circuit are far away from Dar es Salaam about 600km or an 11-hour drive to Arusha city which is used by most tourists on a wildlife safari in Tanzania.

It’s also worth to mention that this case is an isolated case which can’t be used to represent Tanzania as a destination but rather a petty city crime which can happen elsewhere in the world.

Here are some packages in Tanzania and other East Africa destinations.
