UWA ANNOUNCES MAJOR UPDATES: NEW GORILLA GROUPS, GOLDEN CAT TRACKING & FASTER PAYMENTS IN UGANDA (2026)

6 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Chimpanzee Trekking Wildlife Tour

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has released exciting new updates that will make planning your gorilla trek, chimpanzee safari, or wildlife adventure in Uganda much smoother.

On April 14, 2026, Dr. James Musinguzi, Executive Director of UWA, announced three key improvements: a new, reliable payment system, two additional habituated gorilla groups, and the launch of a unique golden cat tracking experience.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Faster & More Reliable Payments at UWA Headquarters

UWA has installed a new Inplant Machine at their Reservations Office in Kampala. All cash payments for permits and bookings must now go through this system.

  • Operating hours: Monday–Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM | Saturday 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • Payments reflect in the system after 24 hours.

This change aims to bring more transparency and reduce delays for both tourists and tour operators.

Two New Habituated Gorilla Groups in Bwindi

Great news for gorilla lovers! Two new fully habituated gorilla groups have been added to the official booking system:

  • Happy Group – Buhoma Sector, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Nshanjare Group – Rushaga Sector, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

With these additions, the total number of habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi rises, meaning more daily trekking slots and better chances to secure a gorilla permit without relying on “extra” permits.

New Golden Cat Tracking Experience in Kibale National Park

Wildlife enthusiasts now have a rare opportunity to track the elusive African golden cat in the Kanyanchu area of Kibale National Park.

Booking details:

  • Booked on the ground only (not yet available online)
  • Reserve 24–48 hours in advance
  • Cost: $350 per person for a five-day tracking window
  • You must bring your own guide; UWA provides ranger support

This low-impact experience is perfect for serious photographers, researchers, and passionate naturalists.

These updates reflect UWA’s commitment to improving visitor experience while promoting sustainable tourism in Uganda’s national parks.
