Lake Nakuru National Park was established in the year 1961 covering 188km2 surrounding Lake Nakuru within the close reach of Nakuru town.  The park is famously known for its enormous counts of Flamingos which is its greatest attraction. The shallow lake surface is hardly recognised as a result of continuous shift of pink mass. The counts of the flamingos on Lake Nakuru would vary according to food conditions and water and always the ideal vantage is from the Baboon Cliff. The Park also features a fenced off sanctuary to ensure the protection of white and black Rhinos and Giraffes.  The park was enlarged further to facilitate the establishment Black Rhino Sanctuary while the fencing is intended to prevent poaching other than wildlife movement. There is a 12.1km extension to the south east border with the Soysambu Conservancy presenting a future possibility for rhino habitat expansion and the single surviving wildlife corridor to Naivasha Lake.
Lake Nakuru from which the park derives its name is at 164km form the capital Nairobi featuring alkaline waters. Because of this proximity from Nairobi, the lake can be explored on a day excursion or as part of the Maasai Mara, Samburu or Lake Baringo Safari.
Over one million flamingos thrive on this lake presenting the greatest and remarkable bird spectacle on global scale. These fuchsia pink Flamingos feed on algae that is thriving in the warm waters. The scientific studies indicate that these Flamingos consume approximately 250,000kg of Algae per hectare of the surface area each year. The Algae is generated by the Flamingo droppings mixing with plankton and warm alkaline waters.

The park is a home to the largest concentration of Flamingos on earth and two species thrive here; The Lesser Flamingo features a pink plumage and deep red carmine bill while the Greater Flamingo features a black tip on its bill. The former are greatly featured in documentaries because of their enormous counts. Besides Flamingos, the park features two (2) giant fish consuming birds namely; the Cormorants and Pelicans. Others include; little grebes, white winged black terns, Goliath heron, African fish eagle, Pied Kingfisher, Hammerkop and Verreaux’s Eagle. In general, there are over 450 species of birds thriving in Lake Nakuru National Park.
