Bwabwata National Park is positioned to the north east of Namibia gazetted in the year 2007 covering a geographical landscape of 6,274km2 having been formed out of Mahango Game Reserve and Caprivi Game Park.
Bwabwata National Park is located in between the regions of Kavango and Zambezi stretching along the Caprivi Strip bordered by River Kwando in the east and River Okavango in the west.
The nations of Botswana and Angola lie to the south and north respectively. The area is popular for the migration of African elephant along with other species from Botswana to destination Angola.
The park features approximately 5,500 people thriving in the park. The park was initially established as Caprivi Nature Park in the year 1963 and in the year 1968, it was upgraded to a game park.
During the Namibian War of Liberation, the South African Defence Force occupied the park and conservation efforts were curtailed until the year 1990 when Namibia secured independence.
Bwabwata National Park stands at 40km from south to north and 190km from east to west and is traversed by the Trans-Caprivi Highway connecting Namibia to the countries of Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Small settlements are recorded at Divundu to the west and Kongola to the east. Bwabwata National Park is generally not fenced but the southern sector features three (3) standard veterinary fences to prevent the cattle disease spread especially the Foot and Mouth disease.
The government of Namibia applies the integrated park management to put in consideration the range of resident people.
Bwabwata is cut into zones with the cores being conservation and then farming. Three (3) areas are allocated for controlled tourism and keen protection and these include; Kwando (1,345km2), Mahango (243km2) and Buffalo (629km2).
An expanse of 4,055km2 is established for community tourism including trophy hunting, farming and human settlement.
The main residents in the park are Kwe san bush men thriving in Omega village to the centre of the park.
The community Association called Kyaramacan undertakes the management of tourism income generated from the camp site, sale of devil’s claw and trophy hunting.

The tree species identified include; Zambezi Teak, False Mopane, Wild Seringa, African teak, Manketti, false mopane, jackalberry, camelthron and Makalani palm.
