Samburu National Reserve is positioned on the banks of Ewaso Ngíro River overlooking the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. The Samburu National Reserve stretches to 165km2 in size and is at 350km2 distance from the country’s capital Nairobi in Samburu County lying at an altitude level of 800 to 1230m above sea level. The Ewaso Ng’iro traverses the doum palm groves along with dense riverine forests in the interior of the park providing water for the extensive wild game in the reserve. Samburu National Reserve is among the two (2) places where Conservationists Joy and George Adamson raised the Lioness Elsa which was later popularised by the Born Free movie and book. The same reserve is also the home to Kamunyak Lioness notably known for adopting the calves of the Oryx. The park features two mountains including Ololokwe and Koitogor while the Ewaso Ng’iro River literally translating to brown water attract counts of animals to drink water. The river runs from the Kenyan Highlands and empties in the Lorian Swamp.

The other wildlife include; Warthogs, Olive Baboon, dik-dik, Grants Gazelle, waterbuck and Impala. Unfortunately, the Rhinos got extinct due to poaching. The numerous crocodile counts thrive in Ewaso Ngíro River.
