The Virunga National Park is not only a Mountain Gorilla haven but also Chimpanzees. Other wildlife in Virunga National Park include; Elephants, Okapi, Hippos, Blue monkey, Olive baboon, Buffalo among others in various sections of the park. The gorilla trekking commences in the morning at the ranger post downhill and involves traversing the forested jungle of the park in the company of the ranger guides. The moment with the Mountain Gorillas in limited to one hour with opportunities for amazing photo shoots and extensive learning about these critically endangered species. Retreat from the activity and connect back to the lodge for relaxation. You can engage in other activities like bird watching or nature walks.

Day 3 of the 7 Days Congo Gorilla & Nyiragongo Volcano Safari: Adventure hike Nyiragongo Volcano
After breakfast at 6am from your lodge in Gisenyi, transfer to Congo boarder at Goma to cross at 7am. Go through the immigration and transfer to Kibati patrol post to catch up with Nyiragongo Adventure hike commencing at 10am. In the company of the ranger guide and the porter, you trek this amazing volcano known to be the world’s most violent and largest lava lake. The trek lasts about 5 hours but it can as well go up-to 5pm depending on one’s physical fitness. Spend the evening on the top of the Mountain and gaze into the red lava lake after dark generating a lasting Congo adventure experience!

Transfer to the starting point after breakfast and embark on the Eastern lowland gorilla trekking in the highlands of Kahuzi Biega National Park which is the only location where these sub species can be explored. The trek lasts 2 – 5 hours but the actual viewing is limited to one hour. The trek to the gorillas also offer likely sights of lush flora and birds. Spend the afternoon at leisure or visit Bukavu town or Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary as optional activities.

Virunga National Park DR. Congo
Virunga National Park is one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the earth. The park lies on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo covering a geographical size of about 7800 sqkms bordering Volcanoes National Park, Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. The park was formed in 1925 by King Albert I of Belgium as the initial national park on the continent of Africa and is managed by the Congolese National Park Authorities. It was initiated mainly to protect the mountain gorillas living in the forests of the Virunga Mountains controlled by the Belgian Congo, but later stretched north to include the Rwindi Plains, Lake Edward and the Rwenzori Mountains in the far north. In the initial 35 years, the margin of the park took shape, poaching was kept to a bottom, and sustainable tourism prospered due to the work of a large body of hand-picked Congolese rangers and dedicated wardens. Land compensation and the use of park resources such as fishing and hunting by the local population became an ongoing problem and attempts were made to solve these issues. When the Belgians established Congo independence in 1960 the new state deteriorated rapidly, and so did the park.

Mountain Nyiragongo in Congo is a massif stratovolcano standing at an altitude 3470m in the Virunga Mountains closely linked with the Albertine Rift valley. Nyiragongo Volcano is located in the western side of the valley of the Virunga national park which provides the spectacular views of the world`s largest lava lake to the tourists in the park. Mountain Nyiragongo is 20km north of Goma town and lake Kivu in Democratic Republic of Congo, adjacent to the west of Congo-Rwanda border. Mount Nyiragongo`s main crater is approximately 2km wide containing a lava lake. The Lava lake at Mountain Nyiragongo is endowed with two airy lava benches the upper one at 3175m and the other at 2975m within its crater walls. Congo`s volcanic mountains-mount Nyiragongo and mount Nyamuragira, take approximately 40% of the volcanic eruptions in the history of Africa. Mount Nyiragongo in Congo houses the world’s largest lava lake. The world`s largest active lava lake has become eminent since 1960`s and 70`s depending on various studies about Nyiragongo volcanic mountain from volcanologists like Kraffts and Tazieff. Kahuzi Biega National Park is a secure area close to Bukavu town in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Its located near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border and most visitors that travel to the park come from either Goma or Rwanda via Rusizi border. Kahuzi Biega National Park is one of the biggest national parks in the country with a coverage size of 6000 sqkms.
Kahuzi Biega National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, engraved in 1980 for its exceptional biodiversity of rainforest habitat and its Eastern lowland gorillas. The park is named after spectacular extinct volcanoes which lead its high altitude sector that is Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega and its one of the safest destinations managed by Wildlife Conservation Society.
