Meru National Park is a Kenyan national park wild and beautiful straddling the equator and located 350kilometers from Nairobi East of Meru. The park covers an area of 870 square kilometers and has abundant rainfall of about 635-762 mm in the west of the park and in the east is about 305-356 mm which results into tall grass and lush swamps making the park one of the best-known National parks in Kenya. The park is bisected by 13 rivers and numerous mountain fed streams and has a diverse scenery from woodlands at 3,400ft on the slopes of Nyambeni Mountain Range North-East of Mt. Kenya to wide open plains with banks of meandering rivers having dotted doum palms.
Meru National Park was one of the two areas where George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised the lioness called Elsa. These two conservationists George and Joy released their most famous lioness Elsa back into the wild and after it was being founded in the year of 1966 and Elsa the lioness is buried in this park together with part of Joy’s ashes which was scattered on her gravesite, the National Park was run by one of by one of the Kenya’s most energetic wardens called Peter Jenkins and it was a popular safari destination. In 1980s the park fell into neglect for more than a decade and into the late 1990s this entrancing wilderness was virtually off limits due to out of control poaching. It was later in the years 2000 and 2005 championed by the international Fund for Animal welfare with the support of the EU and the park became a KWS cause celebre and was comprehensively restored with the newly cut earth roads together with a dedicated force of rangers which are led by a new warden called Peter Jenkins’ together with the son called Mark Jenkins and proof rhino sanctuary which is near the main gate and a home to both black and white rhinos and the protected area since 2005 is considered part of a Lion Conservation unit.

Meru National park hosts and is a home to wide range of wild animals which includes the giraffes, African Bush Elephants, lion, baboon, duiker, bushbuck, eastern black rhinoceros, southern white rhinoceros, hartebeest, kudu, onyx, warthog, zebra, leopard, gazelle, cheetah, hippopotamus and the wildlife is much easier spotted in the eastern areas of the park.
